Engagement RingSome people wait their entire lives for the moment where their significant other gets down on one knee and pops the question. Engagement is a big deal for a great many people and it is easy to see why. Getting married is considered a “next step” for many and the engagement is a precursor to this big move. Still, no matter how excited you might be for the engagement ring around your finger, there are going to come several moments in your life when you should hold back on flashing around your new bling.

Having a general idea of when to showcase this new bit of jewelry and when you should keep it at home can be helpful when you are looking to keep your ring safe. Dive into some of these scenarios and learn more about the when you would be better off letting the ring remain at home.

Summertime Sadness

Getting engaged in the summer can be a wonderful experience. Perhaps you and your partner decided it would be best to get engaged on the warm sands of your favorite beach. While there is a certain magic that comes along with a summertime arrangement, there are also many opportunities for your ring to get damaged from simply going about your summer activities. Swimming, for example, is something most wind up partaking in when the temperatures go up and people are looking for a proper way to cool down.

While it might be great for your feelings of refreshment, the chemicals found in most swimming pools can be seriously damaging to your new engagement ring. If you are planning on taking a dip in a pool, then be sure to remove your ring first. The chlorine in the pool water can discolor and eat away at the metal of your ring and this is something you are going to want to avoid. Similarly, it is a wise idea to remove your ring before hitting the beach. The sand surrounding you while you soak up the sun may damage your ring.

Squeaky Clean

If you are not engaged in the summer or you are not someone who takes time to swim very often, there are still situations where you need to be mindful of your ring. In fact, most people do not realize they should be removing their engagement ring before showering. Hot water can loosen up a ring. In addition, the soap and shampoo used in a shower can lubricate the body and cause your ring to start sliding about. This means you could easily watch helplessly as your beautiful engagement ring slides off your finger and down the drain.

You can do yourself a big favor by avoiding any situations where you will be putting your hands near a drain of any variety. Showering and bathing are the big ones but even a task as simple as washing the dishes can transform into a tragedy when you are not paying attention. Remove your ring and put it somewhere safe before plunging your hand into any watery basins and you are likely to err on the side of caution.

Chemical Party

Finally, you definitely are going to have to take your ring off when you find that your home needs to be cleaned. As with jumping in the pool, the act of cleaning your home involves many dangerous chemical agents. When your ring is exposed to some of these products, it can become damaged. Don’t do any cleaning until you have stored your ring somewhere safe.

Even though you might be bouncing up and down with joy over your engagement, you need to take care of your ring. Stay conscious of when you should be removing your ring, like when you decide to hit the beach or hop in the shower, and you may have an easier time keeping it where it belongs.
