Engagement Ring in Box GraphicAfter you have gotten engaged, you are definitely going to want to show off your ring a lot. Actually, saying “a lot” might be downplaying how often you are going to flash your ring finger in front of friends, relatives, and strangers on the bus. It usually is not about the ring itself, either. For many, simply getting engaged to the right person is enough to want to show off the jewelry to the entire world. There’s nothing wrong with flashing your bling but you do need to consider a few points on when to slip the ring off.

Your engagement ring is a precious item and you definitely are going to feel mad at yourself if you lose it in an avoidable way. To try your hardest to prevent this, take a few precautionary steps and learn about scenarios where it will be best to keep your ring somewhere more secure.

Sand and Water

Depending on where you live and what time of year you get engaged, you could be wearing your ring to many outdoor places. Certain exterior settings are safer than others. For example, you are probably fine keeping your ring on your finger when you are attending a backyard barbecue with friends. You might want to be extra careful not to dirty your diamond when slathering the sauce on some short ribs but your ring is not in any real danger. A trip to the beach, on the other hand, could prove to be a bit more of a threat.

Basically, you do not want to bring your engagement ring with you to the beach at all. Just do not do it. First and foremost, that ring slipping off and disappearing into endless sands or crashing waters means it is very unlikely you will ever see it again. Beyond this, grains of sand are tiny but incredibly destructive. The sand particles can easily catch under the stone in the ring and loosen it, making it easy for you to lose the most precious accents of your ring. Leave the ring home on beach days and play it safe.

Spring Cleaning

Getting engaged doesn’t magically stop all of the responsibilities in your life. You are still going to need to make meals, go to work, and keep your home clean. Though you might not think of it right away, some of these tasks can become a lot more difficult when you are constantly wearing your engagement ring. Tidying up your home involves a number of activities that can lead to your ring getting damaged or lost in the nooks and crannies of your house.

There are a couple of different approaches you can take when you need to spruce up your space. Wearing protective gloves to clean can be helpful because the latex will keep both your ring and skin safe from harmful chemicals and cleaning agents. If you can’t wear gloves or simply don’t want to, you’re probably better off keeping your ring on the shelf until you’ve finished cleaning. This is especially true if you’re doing dishes. A ring falling down a sink drain is too much of a sitcom cliché to let it happen to you.

Don’t Put a Ring On It

Keeping your engagement ring safe is all about using your best judgment. You might feel excited by the new direction your life has taken but don’t allow that exhilaration to cloud your ability to make the right decisions. Leave your ring at home in a secure place when you know there is a risk of it getting lost or damaged. You’re likely going to want to hold onto this item into the future so be sure to put in the effort to protect it.
