Churches, beaches and rustic barns are all beautiful backdrops for a wedding, but they are also common and used by many couples every year. If you and your partner are looking for a truly unique wedding theme, it's time to think outside the box.
Create a Winter Wonderland
Do you love the beauty and quiet of a fresh snow or the shimmering light created by icicles hanging from trees? Create your own winter wonderland for your wedding. If you live in a climate that isn't too cold for your guests, you can have your ceremony outdoors and enjoy the crisp air before moving inside for your reception. Decorate with ice sculptures, "snow," and beautiful winter colors such as silver combined with deep reds, blues or purples. Hang plenty of mistletoe for your guests to enjoy some kisses with their own sweeties. If you love Christmas, you could even take it a step further by having a Christmas-themed wedding.
Have a Happy Halloween
Get married in a pumpkin patch, surrounded by fall colors and smells on October 31. Don't forget to have your wedding guests wear costumes! Decorate with traditional Halloween decorations. Or, if you prefer a more elegant touch, use intricately carved pumpkins, bales of hay and other fall-inspired décor pieces. In addition to your cake, serve candy apples, candy corn, apple cider and plenty of fun-size candy bars. Be sure to do the Monster Mash at the reception.
Combine Gothic and Steampunk
A gothic steampunk wedding brings several amazing and beautiful styles together. Mix vintage or Victorian-style dresses, goth-inspired hair and makeup, and steampunk-inspired top hats, glasses, wheels, and gears. This theme works in a variety of settings. Get married deep in the woods or even in that rustic barn. Mix dark reds, purples, and blues with gray, black or copper tones to create a darkly beautiful color combination. Use a variety of light bulbs, old apothecary jars, and even giant clocks to decorate your ceremony and reception areas.
Build a Children's Carnival
Have you always loved the fun, colorful, sweet-smelling atmosphere of the carnival? Why not bring that nostalgia to your wedding day? Decorate your ceremony and reception with brightly colored balloons and streamers, and ask your officiant to dress up in a carnival-inspired outfit. At the reception, include entertainment such as a photo booth, ball pit, bounce house or even a petting zoo. Don't forget to serve carnival-themed foods.

Attend a Hollywood Premiere
Who wouldn't love a night on the red carpet? Why not walk down one on your wedding day? Hollywood-inspired weddings are a great way for you and your partner to celebrate a love of movies while maintaining the glamour you want from your wedding. Decorate with plenty of bright lights and balloons in colors like silver, black and white, and serve hors-d'oeuvres and champagne throughout the reception. You can kick your reception up a notch by playing some of your favorite classic films in the background.
Be a Bookworm
If you and your partner bond over your mutual love for reading, consider using it as your wedding theme. Many libraries will provide space for you to get married, often for free or for a minimal fee compared to larger venues. Consider serving a menu inspired by your favorite books and passing out copies of those books as wedding favors. If you are into the idea of the tiny libraries that are popping up in neighborhoods around the world, perhaps you could create a group project for your wedding party that involves building two or three of them in your city.
Regardless of which theme you decide on, you are sure to find ways to have a wedding as casual or as elegant as you'd like. Remember, the most important aspect of any theme is to have fun and enjoy your special day with your partner.
