Nerd at Your Wedding

Fairytale weddings are all well and good, but nothing beats a science fiction theme to really tell the world of your depth and commitment to one another. Sure, Halloween comes around every year, but there may be only one opportunity to get a great picture of a bunch of guys in tuxedos huddled around a Dr. Who groom's cake. The following are a few ideas to allow you and your betrothed to let loose your inner nerds.

Pi, Anyone?

It all starts with the math. Thanks to television shows such as "The Big Bang Theory" and "Elementary," math acumen and deductive reasoning are the new sexy. How about table number cards that ask guests to find their seat after they solve for X? Sure, it is kind of obnoxious, but if math is your thing, it speaks to the moment. Of course, you do not want to call out those invitees who are less numerically gifted, so it might be a good idea to print the answer discreetly on the back of the card.

Harry Potter Is NOT Just for Kids

An HP theme has the advantage of some very romantic props in addition to honoring just about the best coming-of-age literary and film series ever. Guests can sign the guestbook with plumed writing instruments. The beverages at the bar can be decanted into fabulous crystal pitchers and vials. A little dry ice behind the dessert table lends that special Hogwarts charm. One creative couple recited their vows under a wedding arch made entirely of antique books.

Superheroes

There is virtually no end to the ways in which superheroes can be woven through a wedding theme. Bedeck the lapels of all the groomsmen with boutonnieres made from miniature action heroes and a sprig of something green. For a lasting gift, present superhero-embossed cufflinks to complete the outfit. Decorate reception tables to reflect your favorites.

May the Force Be With You

Imagine standing at the altar flanked on either side by a loyal battalion of Jedi sisters and brothers, light sabers at their sides. After the ceremony, they might form an arch with the light sabers through which the happy couple can pass on their way to their new adventure.

A Whovian Celebration

What better metaphor for the next leap you make together than the time-travelling Dr. Who? The Tardis alone presents a wealth of opportunity for science fiction fun. Here are some suggestions:

  • Tardis announcements
  • A Tardis photo booth
  • A Tardis ceremonial arch
  • A Tardis tiered wedding or groom's cake

Robots, Pokémon, Legos and More

One great thing about choosing to do a themed wedding is the range and amount of merchandise available. Adorable Lego place cards can be assembled in a snap. The Internet is a vast source for Comic Con aficionados and lay-people alike. As easy as it may be to pull together many of the materials for a whimsical nerd theme, some accessories could take a bit more planning. For example, the partner who wants to propose with a Pokémon engagement ring designed in a pattern of diamonds, rubies and emeralds may have to make a date with a jeweler well in advance.

Serious Whimsy

Themed weddings, whether they are based on a shared love of algebra or on a mutual obsession with Batman, can be a great way for couples to begin a life together. The humor, preparation and commitment to an idea can combine to be a superlative bonding experience. Guests may also feel as though they are participating in the joke and will have more fun. The project could set the tone for a marriage that will honor the need for play as well as the deep commitment necessary to sustain a super life in the future.
