Most people have the desire in life to find the perfect match for them. It's a natural desire for men and women to want partners to have by their side for better or for worse. However, since nearly half of all marriages end in divorce, it is important to make sure you have truly found the right match for you. While there is no foolproof method for guaranteeing you will stay together "till death do you part," there are some signs you can look for that can help determine whether or not the person you are with is the right match for you.
You Can Be Yourself
At the beginning of a relationship, most people want their partners to see them at their best. This may mean that women put on makeup and style their hair every time there's a possibility of seeing their significant other, while a man may be sure to shave his stubble and dress in nice clothing before spending the day with his partner. The same goes for your personality; you may feel that you can't show your bad side or show who you really are without scaring your partner away. While these feelings are normal at the beginning of a relationship, you should begin to feel more comfortable over time. Marriage isn't always perfect, and there are many times when you are going to see each other at your worst. Because of this, you need to be sure you are comfortable with your partner seeing you at your worst, as well as at your best. Your partner needs to be okay with it as well. This may include times such as:
- When you can't get out of bed because you are so sick with the flu
- When you have had a long day and don't feel like being quite as cheerful as you normally are
- When you are too tired to cook dinner like you always do and decide to order a pizza instead
You Make Each Other Better People
It may sound a bit cliché, but it is nice to have someone by your side that brings out the best in you, and vice versa, someone who can help you build on your strengths and become a better person. That isn't to say that you will be able to make each other perfect, because no one in the world is perfect. Focusing on making someone perfect will ultimately end up in a failed marriage. However, having someone that helps your strengths shine through and outweigh any negative personality traits can help ensure a healthy and long-lasting marriage.
You Want to Spend Time With Him or Her
In a marriage, you are committing to spend the rest of your life with a person. Of course, that means you will be spending a great deal of time with him or her. This means you need to enjoy your time together. Ask yourself whether you look forward to every minute you get to spend with your significant other or if it is something you put off or avoid if you don't feel up to it. The latter could be a red flag that you aren't ready for marriage, and it could even mean that you aren't with the right person.
Communication and Honesty
You can't be with someone you don't trust. You also need to be able to communicate with each other. This can be easier said than done. There will probably be times when it feels like you both came from different planets with how little you understand each other. That's to be expected, but what matters is how you come out of it.
These are general guidelines, and there is no way to guarantee a marriage will last a lifetime. However, using these tips can be a great starting point for finding out if this is the real deal.
