The Clifton-Morenci district in eastern Arizona, which includes Morenci, was a significant area for large-scale copper mining operations by 1876. Copper has been Arizona's premier industry, with mining beginning in Ajo in 1854. The Planet mines also opened on the banks of the Colorado River around the same time. By 1880, national and international advances in electrical engineering and the availability of investment capital created a vigorous demand for copper. This surge in demand allowed Arizona to satisfy a rapidly growing market, and the state continues to mine and process about two-thirds of the copper produced in the United States.
