Devon James Bechtel
Ordained Minister in Vilseck, Military Europe/ME/Canada
Why did you originally become an ordained minister online?
I chose to become ordained to better support people during meaningful life moments and transitions, regardless of their religious background. I intended to offer guidance, presence, and ceremonial support in a way that is respectful, inclusive, and grounded in personal conviction rather than institutional pressure. Ordination provided a formal framework to serve others with integrity and legitimacy.
Where are you from?
I am originally from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and am currently stationed in the Grafenwohr and Vilseck area of Germany. I hold an Associate degree in Psychology and am actively pursuing my Bachelor’s. Growing up in a multi-religious household and working within the military community has exposed me to people from all walks of life, shaping a perspective rooted in empathy, adaptability, and deep respect for diverse traditions.
What do you hope to achieve with your online ordination?
Through my ordination, I aim to provide accessible, respectful, and practical ministerial support for those seeking ceremony outside of traditional religious structures. While I am an ordained minister, not a priest, I am dedicated to serving couples and families to the fullest of my ability, helping individuals feel seen, respected, and supported during essential life transitions while honoring their personal choices and values.
Religious Affiliations
Asatru, Norse Religion
Additional Information
My spiritual path is rooted in Norse Heathen tradition, particularly Asatru. While my personal practice informs my perspective, I provide ministerial services in a completely inclusive and non-dogmatic manner. I welcome people of all backgrounds, and every ceremony is shaped entirely around the unique values, story, and intentions of those involved.
What do you think makes your ceremonies special as a Vilseck, AE wedding officiant?
I focus on creating ceremonies that are personal, meaningful, and grounded in the couple's values rather than a rigid template or doctrine. Each ceremony is approached as a collaboration, shaped by the couple’s story, commitments, and intentions. My role is to provide structure and presence while ensuring the moment feels authentic, respectful, and truly reflective of those involved.
Are there particular areas near you where you prefer to travel or have special experience?
I primarily serve the Grafenwohr and Vilseck areas in Germany. Being deeply familiar with military schedules and training cycles, I understand the unique needs and unpredictable timelines of service members and their families.
Depending on the current location and host-nation laws, legal paperwork requirements vary. I provide officiating services at no cost, and couples are responsible for meeting their location's legal marriage requirements (such as state filing, JAG proxy arrangements, or local civil registration) prior to or during the ceremony.
Types of Service Offered
Renewal of Vows, Handfastings, Funerals, General Ministry, Spiritual Guidance
Additional Information
I offer services with a strong emphasis on consent, inclusivity, personal autonomy, and cultural respect. Having grown up in a multi-religious household, and currently living in one with my spouse and child, I have a deep, lived appreciation for honoring diverse traditions, blending beliefs, or crafting entirely secular ceremonies.
My approach is practical, respectful, and flexible. Due to military scheduling and training requirements, my availability may vary, but I work closely with couples and families to accommodate unpredictable timelines whenever possible.
