Sarah Gallen
Ordained Minister in Saint Louis, Missouri
Why did you originally become an ordained minister online?
I initially became a minister to perform a wedding for two of my dear friends, but I realized that the ability to perform weddings is monumental for people who are rejected from traditional wedding space. As a queer person who was excluded from specific religious spaces after dedicating my life to the church, I realized that I never want anyone to feel like they are unsafe to be their full self. Later, I recognized that Funerals and End of Life services are necessary for the healing of those we leave behind in death, and I found myself feeling proud to know that I am also able to assist in times of immense grief.
Where are you from?
I'm from and based out of Saint Louis, MO.
What do you hope to achieve with your online ordination?
My goal is to offer weddings through a Decolonized lens and to emphasize that to love someone else is to be free, not tied down. I want to create a space within the wedding industry that is free from harmful traditions and expectations that can feel stifling. I have dedicated my life to the work of decolonization and unlearning the practices that no longer serve us, or exclude us.
Religious Affiliations
Universal Life Church
What do you think makes your ceremonies special as a Saint Louis, MO wedding officiant?
While Western marriages have many roots in Colonial ideas of property and hierarchy, I still believe that it is a gift to be able to say vows in front of family and community. Dismantling the idea that love is ownership or that marriage is inherently colonial has been a focus of mine for some time. There are many ways that we feel safe and I want to help folks feel safe in their identities and their choice to get legally married.
