Roxanne M. Gates
Ordained Minister in University Place, Washington
About Me:
The question asked to fill out this space is: "Why Should Someone Hire You?".
I could start with the reason I first became ordained in 2008. Some good friends who, at the time, were not legally allowed to marry and were planning a Commitment Ceremony. I just couldn't wrap my head around the idea that two people, who deeply loved one another and were truly committed to a lasting relationship, were not allowed to marry. As you probably know, seven years later, in 2015, they were finally able to marry legally.
I could tell you that I was raised in a Non-Denominational Christian church with a pretty observant family. That I spent many summers at church camp being shaped into a "good Christian", and that some of the friends I made are still very close to me as an adult. Or that I, like many in my family, I attended a Christian college. One that I didn't graduate from, but did learn the kind of spiritual person I wanted to be as an adult.
But I think the most compelling reason I could give you for hiring me is that, I honestly love you. In my over half-century of life, I have lived in several states and regions around the U.S., and traveled outside of it as well. I have seen all different kinds of faith, love, acceptance, understanding, spirituality, and triumph of the human spirit. These experiences only served to prove that we all, at our core, want the same things in life. No matter our race, religion or faith, culture, physical or sexual orientation, or socio-economic background. We all desire to feel safe and secure in our lives, to be free to love and be loved, to have economic and emotional stability, to achieve some of our goals and dreams, and the list goes on.
For far too long, the human race has sought out ways to divide with labels and judgement. Some in an attempt to dominate or simply just to feel better about themselves. Others out of fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of what they don't understand or aren't familiar with. Instead of seeking understanding and knowledge, many people revert to fear and the irrational behavior that come with it. This institutional sadness that has permeated every part of our human race, needs to end. We need to learn how to see our fellow human as truly our fellow. To understand that we may want different things, but that doesn't mean that what someone else wants is invalid or threatens us.
We all get farther when we lift each other up. That is what I aspire to do in my life, and if I can help lift you in any way, that is my goal. I will perform the service of your choosing in a way that feels right for you and your spirituality. I no longer wear the label of Christian, or any other. I have found that my greatest faith is in love. Loving my fellow human, supporting when and where I am able, and being open to all.
Whomever you choose to help you with your journey, I pray that you find the support you seek.
